This short documentary, done by a small team of five, investigates the Chinese legacy in Bandung. It explores the different ways Chinese heritage persevered through years of colonial rule, ethnic exclusion, and cultural oppression. It shows how they have survived and negotiated different circumstances in Indonesia’s history. The film specifically roots its argument in the railway which cuts through the city. That same railway, built by the Dutch over a hundred years ago, was said to be the place where Chinese settlements were concentrated. They were placed there purposefully as a buffer zone, to keep the working-class Sundanese to the south away from the colonial Dutch to the north. Find out how a century-old policy still, in subtle, indirect ways, impacts the society of today.
