A Young Woman reluctantly attends a private birthday dinner arranged by DIANE (or “Mom”). Although the evening starts off tense and rocky, shared laughs and stories allow the two women to warm back up to each other throughout the course of the evening. However, when the Young Woman takes the chance to ask Diane to see her for who she truly is, Diane deflects in favor of keeping up the illusion of pure harmony. Sickened by the glaring reality of their disconnect, the Young Woman refuses to continue the birthday activities. She storms out when an infuriated Diane blames her for the grave mistake that led their relationship down this road. As she gathers her things, she encounters a memory that forces her to reconsider whether she can truly leave all the broken pieces of her actions behind.
