Farmer Liansheng earned his living by farming. Plagued by a poor harvest, he could not afford the college tuition for his two children. He then recalled the 200,000 yuan he had lent his sister’s family in the city years prior for their house purchase, and resolved to go to the city to claim the debt. Upon first arriving, his sister personally met him at the railway station and served a lavish meal at home to host him warmly. Touched by his sister’s kinship and warmth, Liansheng found it hard to voice the debt that was already on his lips. However, his brother-in-law and nephew treated this rural relative with extreme coldness and even contempt. In the end, he steeled his resolve and asked his sister’s family to repay the loan.No clarity is given on Liansheng’s debt recovery at the end of thefilm, with the outcome left open.
