In the ruins of a forsaken apocalyptic city, the robot Hugo scavenges for memory chips, painstakingly reconstructing a vanished world while quietly searching for proof that his own existence still holds meaning. His energy, however, is strictly finite. A cold voice reminds him that his quota has been reached. One day, in a derelict robot-repair shop, Hugo discovers a box of old memory chips engraved with his own name. The moment he inserts it into his chest, a torrent of vivid memories floods back. Soon after, he encounters a stray cat, as lost and abandoned as he is. Their wary standoff gradually softens into tentative trust, until a small metal ball rolls between them. In that simple, shared game, two lonely souls find their only anchor in each other. They build a fragile home in an abandoned garage, stringing scavenged colorful lights across the rafters to hold back the darkness. In each other’s quiet companionship, they discover a warmth neither had dared hope for. Their fragile peace shatters when an alien ship descends and the Reboot Protocol activates, marking every remaining robot for erasure. As the city collapses, Hugo’s energy finally runs out. With his last strength, he drags the terrified cat into an old incubator and pours his remaining power into shielding the small creature from the cold and the annihilating light. When Hugo opens his eyes again, he finds himself lying on the familiar workbench of a half-remembered dream. His body has been meticulously repaired. Standing before him is the man he thought had abandoned him—one who had never stopped searching. This time, he is taking them both home.
