Set in the hills just outside Healdsburg, this short documentary follows John Mills, an off-grid homeowner whose love is expressed not in sentiment, but in labor. As fire season arrives earlier and hotter, John tends his land by testing sprinkler systems, maintaining water infrastructure, burning slash piles, and building a workshop that can also shelter firefighters when they need refuge. What emerges is an intimate portrait of a man whose devotion to home extends beyond his walls — to his neighbors, his community, and the living landscape around him. In John’s world, love is not passive. It is attention, preparation, and the daily work of caring for a place enough to change your life for it.
