“The Deeper It Cuts”, an album by artist/producer Colby C. is the namesake and inspiration for this short film. Played out like a long form multi-feature music video, a man (Colby Hulet) ignores a gut feeling about a hoodwinking woman (Jasmine Clark). The intro contributes an easy but alerted conversation between Colby and a friend of his (Jay Gilbert); which seamlessly transitions into the first feature song “Dangerous” utilizing the self explanatory title to portray temptation, intimacy, and the power Jasmine holds over Colby. The first feature is the perfect excuse to see Jasmine later at her house party, where Colby and all of his friends attend. The party provides the perfect cover naturally, while Colby and Jasmine find themselves playing eye-tag and having some alone time too. Ending the moment with quick flashes, drinks, memories, and a montage to tie up a rager. Fast forward months later after being ghosted by Jasmine, Colby’s friends (Joey Miceli, Makenzie Tafralian, Santino Cardinale) hold a spontaneous intervention to advise Colby to address the issue whether she’ll give the light of day or not. Speeding to Jasmine’s house, he confronts her as soon as the door opens. Only then from her cold responses and body language does Colby realize what he’s feeling is absolutely warranted. This story is a tale as old as time about two young individuals and their careless nature with their emotions. However, it’s an exclamation point on the surrounding topics of love instead of being on the nose. The duality of love and its evasive yet captivating entity is what troubles us all, inevitably being the most interesting anyway. What will you say when you discover you’re alone in this world when you thought someone else shared the same idea of meeting you halfway? The unknown is only the beginning.
