Samudrada Motte is a true story set along the coast of Kundapura, Karnataka, where an elderly fisherman named ‘Babu’ struggled to support his family. During the nesting season, Olive Ridley sea turtles return to the beach to lay eggs, but like many, Babu poached these eggs to earn a living. Everything changed when an NGO called FSL India began creating awareness about marine conservation in local schools—where Babu’s grandson was studying. Inspired by this, and with the support of Dinesh from FSL India and the Forest Department, Babu transformed into a protector of the turtles.
NGOs like FSL India and ReefWatch, along with Babu, the Forest Department, volunteers, and the local fishing community, worked together to monitor nests, take temperature readings, and create safe paths for hatchlings to reach the sea. The film shows how conservation efforts can also support local livelihoods, offering hope for both communities and wildlife. But with climate change posing new challenges, the survival of these ancient sea turtles still hangs in the balance.
