Ming stumbles and falls into the paddy field while chasing geese. His mother, Lan Xufen, abandons the flock to rush him home, unnoticed, and a goose wanders off. Meanwhile, at the mahjong parlor, Mingde wins a round. At that very moment, Xufen scolds Ming for his recklessness. Soon after, Mingde loses all his money at the table. When Xufen goes to fetch Ming, she slips into the paddy field and drowns. At dawn the next day, Mingde sits outside the mahjong parlor, bruised and disoriented. He stumbles home only to find Xufen’s lifeless body. By the water’s edge, Ming returns with the lost goose. And the two reunite.
