Beneath the Surface follows the Sea Lions, a youth underwater hockey program based at the Martin Luther King Jr. Pool in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. The film explores how a little-known sport became a source of belonging, discipline, and opportunity for local youth. Players, coaches, and mentors reflect on leadership, friendship, and the pride of representing the United States on the world stage, while also confronting the challenges of sustaining a volunteer-driven program. At its heart, the film shows how one community pool has become a place of resilience and dreams that extend far beyond the water.
