The Banality Of Evil

The Banality Of Evil

On October 9, 2024 a terrible Hamas attack was perpetrated in Israel leaving more than one thousand one hundred and fifty killed and capturing two hundred and fifty one hostages. The revenge of the Israeli army was not long in coming, causing more than sixty thousand dead, mostly civilians, fifty percent women and more than fifteen thousand children; in addition to a complete devastation of Gaza’s infrastructure. The calls and qualification of genocide by international organizations and the International Criminal Court, show a factual abandonment of international law and evidence of how a supposedly democratic state is capable of circumventing the most elementary principles of international legality; which in no way implies an acceptance of the barbarity of Hamas. The short film fictionalizes the events that probably could have occurred in the decision-making spheres of the United States, so that this nation decided to offer unconditional support to Israel in the execution of its military action. The short film rescues the powerful idea coined by Hannah Arendt: “The Banality of Evil”; the best philosopher of the 20th century, a German Jew who emigrated to the United States to escape from Nazism. The short film is a courageous but at the same time respectful call of attention to the hypocrisy of an adaptive morality and completely forgetful of the suffering inflicted on the Jewish people in the Second World War, which should serve as an ethical support so that the victims do not become executioners.

Directed by Oscar Vega (Spain)
