Strange Ava tells the story of Ava, a girl with ADHD, and her growing years. ADHD, the abbreviation for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, has led to many children with this condition being nicknamed “A-Kids” (A-Wa in Chinese pinyin).
Countless ADHD teenagers in China, a major country in education, have never been properly recognized—they are constantly disciplined and suppressed. Ava is just such an ordinary yet “strange” girl.
The story takes place in the “wild era” of China’s transition between the old and the new: the millennium. Through a series of absurd and abstract expressive techniques, it portrays Ava’s collision and exploration of desire, fantasy, and family relationships during her growth. When the teenage Ava is finally diagnosed with ADHD after struggling with herself, how will she coexist with her true self in the years to come? This is Ava’s story, and also the unique growth memory of countless members of Generation Z.
