Short Scrip Competition of October 2025

Posted by

Each month, the Indie Short Fest jury reviews a handpicked group of short scripts submitted from across the globe — stories distinguished by their originality, structure, and cinematic vision. These evaluations underscore the festival’s ongoing dedication to discovering exceptional storytelling at its very foundation: the script stage.

In this spirit, we are pleased to present the top five scripts of the October 2025 edition, recognized for their creativity, narrative craftsmanship, and unique authorial voice. The scripts appear below in ranked order (1 to 5) based on the jury’s overall assessment.

The Seed Between Worlds and Stars — Celeste M. Escalera (USA)

Best Short Script

A luminous, introspective work that blurs spiritual awakening and science-fiction allegory. The Seed Between Worlds and Stars unfolds with cinematic grace—anchored by an empathic protagonist and lyrical world-building that feels intimate yet cosmic. Its prose is immersive, its rhythm meditative, and its emotional depth extraordinary. Even with a slightly long runtime for a short, every page glows with purpose and identity.

Strengths: Elegant narrative voice, profound emotional clarity, philosophical cohesion.
Weaknesses: Minor tightening could help sustain late-scene momentum.
Comparable to: HerArrivalContact.

Echoes — Xiaoyi Li (China)

Outstanding Achievement Award for Short Script

A poetic, elegantly restrained script that merges science fiction and existential reflection. Echoes uses dreamlike imagery and sparse dialogue to explore identity and memory with remarkable subtlety. Its pacing is measured but purposeful, revealing emotion through rhythm and sound cues that feel tailor-made for cinematic treatment. A rare short that balances intellect and heart with precision.

Strengths: Lyrical tone, visual precision, emotional resonance, thematic depth.
Weaknesses: Slight ambiguity in final reveal could risk audience detachment if not directed carefully.
Comparable to: ArrivalAnnihilation, and shorts from Love, Death & Robots.

Silent Screams — Jiayi Ouyang (China)

Honorable Mention for Short Script

A powerful, haunting short that merges psychological horror with emotional realism. Silent Screams captures trauma and repression through quiet, cinematic restraint—its tension built as much by silence as by what is unseen. The writing displays confidence in tone and rhythm, offering a clean visual grammar ideal for adaptation. While a few secondary beats could tighten for pacing, the core narrative is both visceral and poetic.

Strengths: Precise imagery, evocative atmosphere, layered subtext about guilt and grief.
Weaknesses: Occasional repetition of internal reflection; could heighten external conflict slightly earlier.
Comparable to: The BabadookLights OutThe Silent Child.

R.E.M. — John P. Martinez (USA)

Nominated for Best Short Script

A cerebral psychological thriller that fuses conspiracy, mind control, and morality in cinematic form. R.E.M. is dense yet riveting—crafted with structural precision and visual tension. The scale feels feature-ready, and while the dialogue sometimes leans procedural, the concept is bold and highly adaptable. It’s both dystopian and human, an impressive feat for a short.

Strengths: High-concept premise, professional pacing, cinematic tone, thematic ambition.
Weaknesses: Occasional exposition overload; could simplify character web for clarity.
Comparable to: InceptionBlack MirrorMinority Report.

Enticed (The Blue Trilogy: Indigo) — Roxane Dupont & Azy Intara (USA)

Nominated for Best Short Script

An elegant romantic thriller blending sensual mystery and spiritual longing. Enticed reads with confidence, balancing emotion and atmosphere in equal measure. Its poetic language, Paris-set intrigue, and undercurrent of reincarnation make it feel cinematic and psychologically layered. A few transitions between dream and reality could sharpen for pacing, yet the tone remains hypnotic and mature.

Strengths: Distinctive voice, striking mood, layered emotional stakes, stylish dialogue.
Weaknesses: Occasional over-description; midpoint could use a stronger turning event.
Comparable to: The DreamersEyes Wide ShutIn the Mood for Love.
