The Tracks We Leave explores a strained relationship between a young boy named Prince and his grandfather, Jerry, as they navigate a rugged, remote landscape. Prince, who lacks experience withthe outdoors, is resistant to learning the skills Jerry insists on teaching him. During a camping trip, Prince’s poor knot-tying causes his horse toescape. The two set out in the woods to retrieve the horse, but Jerry’s pride and Prince’s inexperience lead the two to separate, where Prince ultimately falls off a ledge chasing the horse. Jerry, guided by his sense of duty and care, finds Prince stranded on a narrow ledge with an injured ankle and the horse dead below. Jerry, with a newfound patience, talks Prince through tying a secure knot that allows him to pull his grandson to safety. The story ends with Jerry carrying an injured Prince back to camp, reflecting on loss, responsibility, and the lasting impact of the”tracks” each generation leaves for the next.
