Deep inside the forests in the frontiers of Yunnan, there lies, in seclusion, the last primitive tribe of China. The metamorphosis from people to butterflies after their deaths deeply resides within their beliefs, and the butterflies, also deemed as sprites, bestowed the prosperity of their descendants. Therefore, abode by the ancestral customs, on the countenances of the the females within the tribe, were the ineradicable emblems of butterflies imprinted, with prongs made of bamboo and ink made of ashes of greens. Such feminine aspect, marked by these tattoos, became a symbol that has been inherited from their ancestors for generations. They are the Derung people, an ethnic group that is still secluded in China.
