On a dirt road near a riverbank in the early morning, a FUGITIVE curses his dead car and hears men talking a short distance away. He slips through the trees and sees an old truck in a clearing and next to it big ex-con BUSTER bullying and taunting elderly POPS as they de-leg the bucketful of frogs they’ve gigged during the night.
As Buster boasts about having sex with Pops’ teenage granddaughter, Faye, the Fugitive, armed with a .32, steps into the open and tells them he’s taking their truck. Buster rushes him with his butcher knife, but the Fugitive fires his gun and takes him down with a shot to the chest.
The Fugitive, clearly shaken by what has happened, nervously orders Pops to grab his wounded partner and get him into their gigging boat. He throws Pops a paddle and tells him to get Buster help downriver.
FAYE, worried about her grandfather’s intentions after finding out his shotgun is missing from their home, appears behind the Fugitive with a .22 rifle and orders him to drop his weapon.
Pops climbs out of the boat and orders the Fugitive to get in. He grabs the shotgun he’d hidden in the back of the truck and sends Faye home. Sensing the Fugitive is not the hard-core killer he claims to be, Pops tells him he can get Buster some help at a fishing camp downriver. “You see me doing that?” the Fugitive asks.
Pops orders the Fugitive to get to paddling. As for himself, Pops says, he is going to the sheriff to tell him everything that happened before he “was lucky enough to escape.”
The Fugitive begins paddling but then stops to ask Pops why he would bring a shotgun to go frog gigging. “You never mind,” Pops tells him. “Whatever it was, it’s done been taken care of.”
