After an upset in college, a young woman, Mare, shamefully returns home to her family in the small southern town of Ginger Shores. The same boring country town that she had always dreamed of escaping from. Almost miraculously and on just the second day home, Mare is the one that answers the door to a search & rescue diver who brings with him pieces to a family mystery that had been buried under the town’s man-made lake for over 50 years. Against her grandmother’s wishes, Mare still reads the strangely preserved journals that were penned by her great-grandmother, Mary. The writings detail Mary’s battle with cancer, the loss of her daughter, and her constant prayers for God to intervene and heal her broken family. Inspired by a real-life cancer survivor’s fight, Dear Cancer weaves together forgiveness, love, and the belief in the importance of family, as well as helping many other broken multi-generational families find hope decades after Mare’s great-grandmother’s death.
