Due to geographic and historical reasons, there is imbalanced economic development and severe wealth disparity in different regions of China. A large number of villagers from remote areas come to cities for work in order to change their living conditions. Nevertheless, the long-standing urban-rural dual system in China, as well as the unfair treatment of migrant workers by society, prevent them from having the means and ability to bring their children with them to the cities. Currently, there are over 60 million left-behind children in China, making them a large and vulnerable group.
The story depicts the current wealth gap in China and the psychological issues faced by left-behind children. Due to their parents migrating to the city for work, these children lack care and education for an extended period. As a result, some of these once innocent and naive children develop psychological problems, becoming impulsive and irritable, harboring resentment towards society and hatred for the wealthy, and even displaying tendencies toward criminal behavior. The two left-behind children in the story each have radically different worldviews, with one of them taking criminal actions that inadvertently cause them to commit a murder. The pervasive clash of worldviews throughout the story gives it a compelling and tragic quality. Additionally, the superhero masks in the film serve not only as props for their criminal activities but also as a metaphor for their yearning for social justice and fairness. Ultimately, they all remove their masks.
