Through the lens of your young black female professor : “Professor Blackteach” highlights the racist micro-aggressions that African Americans endure on a daily basis. In this short film, Tiara Blackteach, the newly hired African American studies professor at Preedom White University, realizes that although she is an African American woman she is, in all actuality, unqualified to teach this class due to her own privileged and affluent upbringing. She reaches a breaking point that forces her to look at her own reflection and dive deep into her knowledge of SELF. The film uses a masterful mix of comic relief to tackle heavy topics making the audience laugh themselves into a trance of understanding; while realizing that a lot of us need to take a hard look in the mirror. Racism can be as loud and in your face as a lynching like George Floyd or as subtle as someone refusing to correctly pronounce your name. Many women understand the frustration of having to explain to their caucasion counterpart why she can NOT touch your hair and shouldn’t to be quite frank! This film goes there on every level and from every direction. Professor Blackteach challenges its viewers to fight for a better America; a better sense of SELF for all people; and to celebrate all the nuances of black culture. It reinforces the importance of knowing your roots and is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves. Bringing together dynamic characters from all walks of life and placing them in a classroom together is the perfect cocktail of fun, ignorant comments, bad decisions, romantic love affairs, jokes, and drama. Actually that’s not a cocktail. Professor Blackteach is more like a long island iced tea! (Be sure to check out the extended version.)
