A Fantasy of Companionship between Human and Inanimate

A Fantasy of Companionship between Human and Inanimate

This tells the story of a future companionship between a child and a plush inanimate toy ALAN. It draws inspiration from the longevity and loneliness that pervades modern society today, set against the backdrop of the disruptive sciences and technologies, which has given rise to a new breed of embodied, artificially intelligent companions. ALAN’s origins begin in the jungles of Tanzania, with the journey of a soul, from wild to captive, then on to a village toy factory where it becomes trapped in a cotton body suit, a plush companion with a soul. The plush companion arrives in California, is displayed in a shop, and purchased by the mother of a child Christina, who names it ALAN. They remain together, all through the growing up years. As Christina blossoms into a young woman, soon to become a doctor. ALAN becomes aware of its own mortality, and the risk of losing its companion. It demands a new world order for itself, embraces synthetic biology to repair its wizened form, artificial intelligence to enable it to communicate, and ultimately teleports, its soul to be quantum entangled within Christina forever. This is after all, a fantasy.
