The film RED follows a young Chinese-American woman, Olivia, who has to find a way to ask her mother for financial help for her newlywed husband, Nathan. This simple request only spirals into more chaos as Olivia struggles to find her voice while her mother, an ever-looming presence in Olivia’s adult life, perpetuates the cycle of control in Olivia’s new marriage to Nathan. Olivia is torn between her new family and old family – Western culture and Eastern culture. The story pushes the limit of a relationship between the daughter and the mother within a Chinese household, with a dynamic that still speaks to all families.
