In the 1980s, a young girl, Hu Xiaolong, was raised as a boy by her patriarchal father in a village in northern Fujian, China. Her confusion about her gender identity prevents her from participating in the male-dominated snake-hunting festivals. To force Xiaolong to admit her “male identity”, Xiaolong’s father arranges a marriage for her with a blind girl, Ruixin; but Xiaolong is gradually aware of her female identity in this relationship.

Leon comes to discover that the house is devoid of any Christmas cheer and has now become a shrine to his recently deceased Mother. While his young sister is happy to see him, his father can’t help but feel abandoned by his son. Not only will Leon have to finally face the grief he’s been avoiding, but learn whether he will be doing more damage by staying or leaving.
